SF Fishing Report

SF Fishing Report

Captain Rich Smith has been seeing bones and permit all over Biscayne Bay of late. Large schools of permit are showing up inside Midnight Pass and on the snake leading into Caesar’s Creek. Cutter Bank has been the most consistent for bonefish. Fishermen staked off at Curtis Point reported seeing a few schools of tarpon heading south, but the fish were apparently not in an eating mood. Rich and his clients also had some fun the other day with lemon and blacktip sharks in the 5-9 foot range.

Marine Stadium

Miami Marine Stadium

This week, Miami’s Marine Stadium garnered national attention from NPR (National Public Radio). The abandoned stadium, which sits on Virginia Key, has sat vacant since Hurricane Andrew destroyed it in 1992. After the storm, the City of Miami deemed the arena “unsafe” for further use.

Cuban-American Architect Hilario Candela designed Marine Stadium in 1963. The 6,500-seat stadium was originally built for powerboat racing and overlooks Biscayne Bay. According to NPR, the stadium was also where President Richard Nixon hugged Sammy Davis Jr. at a 1972 voter’s rally, an Elvis Presley movie was filmed there and everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Jimmy Buffet have performed on the stadium’s floating stage. After sitting vacant for nearly 16 years, the stadium is now dilapidated and covered in graffiti. It also serves as a favorite hangout for local skaters.

A glimmer of hope shimmers on the horizon for Marine Stadium with the recent formation of Friends of the Miami Marine Stadium, a collection of preservationists and architects. With the support of Dade Heritage Trust, the group is lobbying the City to begin repairs on the once vibrant landmark.

To enhance awareness, the Friends of Miami Marina Stadium have a proposed artistic light installation in the works, as well as a team of organization sponsors standing behind them. Find out what you can do for Miami Marine Stadium. Click here to read a statement from Marine Stadium's Architect, and here to read Critical Miami's take on the landmark.

Plum Q & A

Jon Tisch

Plum TV sat down with Jonathan Tisch, chairman & CEO of Loews Hotels, co-chairman of the Loews Cooperation and host of "Open Exchange - Beyond the Boardroom with Jonathan Tisch," a series of one-on-one interviews with America’s preeminent CEOs and business people on Plum TV and CNBC.

The Loews Miami Beach Hotel was recently named Corporate Citizen of the Year by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. Tisch will be accepting the award at the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce 86th Annual Gala this Saturday. We spoke with him about this honor.

PLUM: Loews Miami Beach is being honored as Corporate Citizen of the Year, how do you feel about this honor?

TISCH: I am honored and excited to be accepting this award on behalf of more the 800 members of the Loews team. In December, we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary, and we cherish our role as a member of the Miami Beach community, one of the most dynamic destinations in the country.

PLUM: How do you see The Loews fitting into the Miami Beach landscape?

TISCH: When we opened, we saw the opportunity to really send a message to meeting planners, executives, travel agents and travelers that South Beach is a dynamic destination and was “back” as a destination. We also wanted to set a standard as far as amenities and service – something we could be proud of. Also, something Miami Beach would be proud of. This recognition says to our team that our effort has been appreciated. We work together to ensure that the hotel is successful in Miami Beach.

PLUM: What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re in Miami?

TISCH: The first thing I do when I arrive at The Loews is go for a run on the beach. I really do look forward to that. I also like walking around the pool deck and listening to what guests have to say, about the hotel, about South Beach. We are so proud to have worked with the city. I also enjoy looking at the new properties, seeing what other visionaries are doing in the industry.

PLUM: What are your favorite restaurants?

TISCH: Joe Allen’s, Joe’s Stone Crab and Prime 112, I try to hit all of them at least once when I’m in town.

PLUM: Can you talk about your involvement with Plum?

TISCH: It really has been an honor to be part of the programming over the past few years. “Beyond the Boardroom” gives viewers the chance to eavesdrop between two CEOs such as Clive Davis, Steve Ross, Mort Zuckerman and Keith Reinhard – extraordinary individuals that have come from modest upbringing. The show migrated from Plum to CNBC. It was exciting to take Plum programming to a national network. I admire Plum for its original programming that is deeply rooted in the community.

Best Brunches

Brunch

Brunch, that magical time between breakfast and lunch. It’s one of our favorite Sunday rituals. Is it the fusion of breakfast/lunch fare, the social interaction with your dear companions, or the excuse to indulge in champagne before noon? Either way, we have you covered with some of the best spots on the beach.

Cinco de MiMo

The Vagabond Motel

Piggybacking off Cinco de Mayo, the Miami Modern architecture movement is launching Cinco de MiMo, a two-day festival celebrating the MiMo movement. Festivities kick off Friday night with a Frieda Kahlo look-alike contest, piñata cracking, snacks, cocktails and more at the Upper Eastside Gardens.

Game Fare

This past weekend we stopped by Dolphins Stadium to catch a Florida Marlins game. The baseball action took a backseat to the food, as we ate our way through the stadium's delicacies.
