Animals Inherit Millions

Ron2
In an unbelievable act of generosity an anonymous donor has left Miami Metro-Zoo a gift of $2,307,684.36.

The zoo’s communications director, Ron Magill, in front of the Miami-Dade commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, displayed the check. It was just the final gift in a silent partnership that started when an elderly man with white hair first approached Magill ten years ago. The man told him that he loved Metrozoo, and then proceeded to hand Magill a check for $90,000.

Pawpurrazzi

Dogs
On Friday night Jungle Island went completely to the dogs. Pawpurrazzi, a fund raising event for the Humane Society was a star-studded evening of food, fashion and entertainment. Aimed at raising $125,000 for the care of homeless animals, the event featured a dog and human fashion show and luxurious flower arrangements by Karla Dascal. Among the local VIPs socializing at the event were emcee Lisa Petrillo; TV personality Star Jones; University of Miami President Donna Shalala; developer Don Soffer; and philanthropists and socialites Donald and Lisa Pliner and Lola Jacobson. Latin designer Rene Ruiz was also there and participated in the dog/human fashion show.

Visiting MetroZoo with Ron Magill

Meet Miami's resident crocodile hunter. Ron Magill, communications director for Miami MetroZoo, has been working with wildlife for over 30 years. He's swum with sea lions off of the Galapagos, tracked tigers on the back of an elephant in India and shared the wonders of the animal kingdom with thousands of locals. We talked to Magill about the zoo, the animals and life in the great outdoors.

The Penguins are Coming

The Penguins Are Coming

Meet Miami’s newest exotic residents – four African penguins are making their official debut at Jungle Island tomorrow morning.

Native to South Africa and Namibia, the birds are warm-weather penguins, so they should acclimate easily to Miami’s heat and humidity. Males Kidogo and Giant and females Little Red and Leelow communicate by squawking and are black on their dorsal side, face, flippers and heads for easy camouflage.

In 1900 there were approximately 1.5 million penguins in the world, today there are an estimated 17,000, with the populating declining by 2% every year. Kidogo, Giant, Little Red and Leelow should live to about 30 at Jungle Island, roughly twice as long as they would in their declining natural habitat.

The birds will live in Jungle Island’s Serpantarium and will be fed twice daily for public viewing at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Haute Dog Howl'oween

What says Halloween more than a pug in a bunny costume? Luckily, we'll never have to find out. Residents of the Flamingo South Beach trotted out their best and brightest doggie costumes last weekend for a heated competition, complete with a red carpet, food, drinks and music by DJ Supersede.

Fun with Fido

Dogs really must be man’s best friend. For who else would we brave heat, humidity and general September nastiness? Puppy love can do powerful things. Enjoy these shots of some of the cuddliest pooches around then send us some of your own.
