South Florida Fishing Report

May 28th, 2008 3:37pm

After growing up in upstate New York, Tony Ludovico was “blown away by the ocean” the day he moved to Florida. He has since concentrated his efforts on photographing large pelagic fish like sailfish and marlin in open water, shooting underwater film for numerous television shows. He’ll “continue to push the envelope with underwater stuff, always thinking about a new angle, another species to target.”

Finally the much needed rain has begun to fall. This should really turn the fishing on according to Captain Rich Smith.

While recent NE and E winds have made visibility difficult in Biscayne Bay, some bonefish and permit are still being caught. Captain Rich Smith has been spotting tarpon traveling north and south on the outside of Elliot Key. They've been looking for big schools of mullet to feed on.

Fleet Week 2008

Fleet Week lands on the shores of South Florida this week, bringing five U.S. Navy ships; one Coast Guard cutter; and 2,500 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel to our sunny shores.

Festivities (unofficially) kicked off with All Hands on Deck, a party to bring civilians and America's heroes together at the Seminole Hard Rock & Casino.

On Monday, hundreds of family and friends lined the dock at Port Everglades waiting for their loved ones. (Click here to read the Miami Herald's article on the scene).

The soldiers will take time off to visit South Florida attractions and spend time with their friends and family. For a photo gallery of Fleet week, click here.

Events honoring the men and women who serve our country are open to the public and are happening all around the area.

The wait is finally over. According to Captain Rich Smith, the bonefish in Biscayne Bay have settled into their normal working patterns. Hot spots include Ragged Keys, Sands Cut, Cutter Bank and Midnight Pass. He also spotted a school of 30 tarpon between 50 and 150 pounds heading North, just outside of Caesars Creek. Oh yes, they have arrived.

Some days are just better than others when it comes to fishing. Tim Borski reported an incredible day on the water last week with his two boys, Josef and Gus. Fishing out of Islamorada last Thursday, they boated somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 snook and tarpon.
