CANDO Can Do

Miami Beach got a little more artist-friendly today. The City Commission unanimously approved a final vote for the Cultural Arts Neighborhood District (CANDO). Conceived by Mayor David Dermer in 2006 as a way to nurture artistic growth on Miami Beach, CANDO provides tax benefits and/or zoning incentives to entice artists, writers, musicians, dancers and designers to live and work on the island.

Bottom line – build it, make it affordable and they will come.

And it seems they will. Over 20 cultural venues and organizations have set-up shop in the area, which runs from Lincoln Lane to 24th Street and Lenox Avenue to Ocean Drive. Famed tenants include the Bass Museum of Art, the Colony Theater, the Miami Beach Regional Library and Plum TV.
