Azucar! Ten years in the making, the life and times of Cuban singer and actress Celia Cruz is set to hit the Tribeca Film Festival this month.
The documentary called Celia The Queen is the brainchild of Joe Cardona and Mario De Varona, which together make up Kids in Exile films.
Due to financial constraints, the film almost didn’t happen. It wasn’t until famed Cuban actor Andy Garcia stepped in and gave the filmmakers the push they needed to finally complete the film.

I loved seeing my painting
I loved seeing my painting of Celia on this website. She was amazing! I wish I could have met her and heard some of her music live. Never got a chance, darn! So I painted her portrait trying to capture her exuberance and vitality along with her outrageous costumes. The young girls in the background dancing to her rhythms was an image I picked up from first being introduced to Celia’s music on a PBS production. I was so charmed by "The Queen" and her fellow musicians that I just had to put them on canvas. I gathered up many images of Celia to bring my painting to fruition. Looking at it I can almost hear her belting out a tune to energetic Latin sounds. Long live Celia! Azucar!
