Yesterday’s sticky, sweaty American Idol auditions prompted endless lines, zany outfits and many (many) impromptu bursts of song. Over 10,000 aspiring idols from Florida, Texas, Georgia, Wisconsin, Ohio and more flocked to the American Airlines Arena to perform one solo and one group performance for a panel judges.
The lucky winners were granted access to a second round of auditions, this time in front of AI executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick. Pass that round, and they’ll get to sing for Simon, Paula and Randy. We braved the mayhem to bring you photos and videos. A few of our favorite highlights:
- On-site Dave Barry commentary
- A girl in a full-body lobster suit that screamed: “Where’s the butter?”
- A Floridian clad in a cotton-candy-pink kimono (gotta love the locals) singing The Lion King’s “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.”
- Hugs, chatter and smiles galore from host Ryan Seacrest.
- Periodic bursts of Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm is Gonna Get You" from the crowd.
- A man with fake teeth and a bright purple suit…need we say more?

can't believe how many
can't believe how many people would get up that early - they're all nuts!
What fun!
Those people seem kind of crazy, but so much fun! I also love to hate American Idol! But I love when Plum reports on it!
I enjoy the segment you did
I enjoy the segment you did on my work at the airport and my pleasure in growing up in Miami Beach! I'm finding your wonderful segment travels everywhere! Best, Michele Oka Doner
