Lure of the Venetian Pool

Jonathan Vigliotti

So, how do you get rid of a rock quarry pit in the middle of your newly designed city? Do what Coral Gables founder George Merrick and architect Phineas Paist did: make it a pool. This week, ON Assignment takes us to the famed Venetian Pool, diving into its history and preservation efforts through the years. Before you jump into our video, here are some quick facts:

  • The pool holds 820,000 gallons of water.
  • During the summer months, the water is replenished with water from the aquifer below the pool.
  • The water is then recycled back into the aquifer, where it is naturally filtered.
  • The pool is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Water depths range from two feet (wading pool) to over eight feet by the large waterfall.

The Pool is Cool

I've been to the Venetian Pool and felt like a 40s starlet. It's worth a visit.

this looks like a great way to cool off in the brutal heat. i've never heard of it before

Venetian Pool

I was born in Maimi and every summer my mother would take us kids to Venetian pool it was the best time of my life. I'am glad to see that it is still there. I would love to take my son.

Oh how I miss the Venetian

Oh how I miss the Venetian Pool. Since moving to Atlanta, I have not been back since just after college. I remember getting to Venetian Pool too early and they were still filling it up for the day. Water was great but chilly but felt good on a very hot summmer South Florida day. Glad to see it is still going strong!

my parents used to tell me

my parents used to tell me stories about the pool.how they played and other fun times they had there.they gave me the chance to take swiming lessons there.after the lessons i suddenly stopped coming.i miss swimming there, i believe it happened because the fees where so much money. when i have children,i will make shure that vanetian pool is big a part in their lives. its such a wonderfull feeling to know its still here.

I was born in Maine and from the age of six grew up in Miami.Venetian Pool was a staple for my friends and I every weekend. I have come full circle and live in Maine. I am 55 yrs. old. I saw an article about places to visit in the Sunday Maine Telegram newspaper. Venetian Pool was an attraction. I have not thought about that pool in years. What wonderful memories it brought back. Are the diving boards gone? I always jumped off the low board, and had to work up the nerve to jump off the high board. I notice by your website there have been a lot of renovations. I did not see the diving boards. I do have my wonderful memories and I just wanted you to know. Linda Taksier Schiefer

I was born in Coral Gables

I was born in Coral Gables and my Dad took me to the Pool to learn to swim when I was about 3 or 4. After you paid in those days you passed through that little building before getting in to the children's area. The building was a concession area and it was FULL of candy. All kinds of candy to buy. We spent so many wonderful days there in the late 50's. I would never trade growing up in Coral Gables for the world.

I moved to Florida in the

I moved to Florida in the early seventies, but didn't go to Venetian Pools until the early eighties. At that time, they didn't have any concessions, and I brought in fruit, cheese, and wine. What a great way to pic-nic: on the grass, under the palm trees, next to the grotto!!!!! The admission is pricey, but definitely worth it. I took my kids at least once every summer, they love it too. It's a great Miami experience.
