Up in Smoke

Tellfords Pipe & Cigar

In Miami, where there's smoke there's usually a great Cuban cigar. And when there's a great Cuban cigar, there's usually a whole lot of history. We visited Little Havana's El Credito Cigar Factory to peel back the label on this storied Cuban art.

A few fun facts we picked up along the way:

  • The darker the leaf, the stronger the tobacco.
  • For high quality stogies, tobacco is left to ferment 2 to 5 years.
  • Altadis' Cohiba Behike is said to be the world's most expensive cigar at $420 a pop.
  • The world's longest cigar was made in Tampa, Florida in 2006 and measured 101 feet long and weighed 53 pounds.

Bring home a piece of Cuban history:

hi, that's a cool story.

hi, that's a cool story. hey aren't cuban cigars illegal in the States? are these cuban seed, cuban grown leaf shipped here type of thing? i thought there was an economic embargo.
just wondering.

Hi Lucy, great question -

Hi Lucy, great question - it's illegal to buy cigars grown, harvested and manufactured in Cuba because of the US trade embargo on Cuba. But these cigars dodge the law by using Cuban seeds that are grown in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Ecuador. You can light up guilt-free!

Cigars

I just got a lesson on makeing the cuban cigers. I thought only the men did it?just show's I don't know much.Good story.

Yes, these are made with

Yes, these are made with tobacco grown in the Dominican with Cuban seeds. But these cigars are NOT Cuban and they will never come close to tasting like a real Cuban made cigar. The reason for this is because it all depends on the soil and there is no soil like the Cuban soil. You want a real Cuban, go to a country that allows Cuban products to be sold like Mexico or Canada.
Grazie e ciao a tutti.
