South Florida Fishing Report

The South Florida Fishing report is a new weekly blog that dishes out expert advise on just where the fish are biting.

Steady 60 to 80 degree temperatures make Miami hard to beat this time of year. Even the sailfish seem to know it. Captain Ray Rosher, of Miss Britt Charters, says 68 boats released 260 sails in last weekend’s one day tournament. Mahi, cobia and kingfish are also running in decent numbers.

Worldwide Sportsman’s
Chris Hunter finds fish in unlikely places. Save gas and fish the shorelines in the canals. Peacock bass are spawning in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Flies and artificial lures are pulling in three to six pounders. Right now, Tamiami Canal (C4) and Snapper Creek (C2) are two good places to look for peacocks, largemouth, snook, and tarpon.

Out in the bay, Captain Rich Smith is catching bonefish on Burger King flat and at Cutter Bank off Elliot Key. The calmer the day, the better. Tarpon are starting to get active in the mouths of the creeks in the everglades, along with snook and redfish. He’s using brown and orange flies, imitating Mayan Cichlades. The good news…fishing on the flats should only get better over the next month as temperatures warm.--Tee Clarkson
