Some days are just better than others when it comes to fishing. Tim Borski reported an incredible day on the water last week with his two boys, Josef and Gus. Fishing out of Islamorada last Thursday, they boated somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 snook and tarpon.
Captain Rich Smith and his clients had good luck out of Flamingo last week, landing some quality tarpon over 100 lbs and a bunch of nice snook up to 38 inches. Fishing in Biscayne Bay hasn’t quite hit its stride, but some bonefish are around with small schools of permit showing up on occasion.
Chris Hunter at Worldwide Sportsman doesn’t expect the short cold front at the beginning of the week to negatively affect fishing in canals or offshore. Peacock bass, largemouth and snook have continued biting consistently in the canals. Coral Gables Waterway (C3), Tamiami (C4) and Snake Creek (C9) are good places to start.
On the beaches, fishing for mackerel has slowed, but the bite for tarpon and cobia has improved as both species move north on their annual migration.
Offshore, boats fishing in the recent Yamaha Contender Billfish Tournament, did well on sailfish south of Fowey light.
Now is the time to think about targeting some of the giant bluefin tuna in the deep ocean alleys of the Gulf Stream. The fishing gets good as they migrate towards Mediterranean and southeast Canadian waters.
