The wait is finally over. According to Captain Rich Smith, the bonefish in Biscayne Bay have settled into their normal working patterns. Hot spots include Ragged Keys, Sands Cut, Cutter Bank and Midnight Pass. He also spotted a school of 30 tarpon between 50 and 150 pounds heading North, just outside of Caesars Creek. Oh yes, they have arrived.
Fishing in the Everglades, which had been very good, slowed with the switching winds over the weekend. East and southeast winds are definitely the best for big poons.
Chris Hunter from Worldwide Sportsman says fishing in the canals is “outstanding” right now for snook, largemouth and peacock bass. Coral Gables Waterway (C3), Tamiami Canal (C4), Snake Creek Canal (C9) and South New River (C11) remain the best bets for action.
Anglers on the beaches are catching bluefish early in the morning, along with the occasional snook and tarpon. Fishermen on the Jetties at Government Cut, Haulover Cut and Port Everglades Cut are having luck with the same species, as well as mangrove snapper and a variety of grouper.
Offshore, dolphin are cruising weed lines in deeper water and some small wahoo are still hanging around the edge of the Gulf Stream. Sailfish should keep biting this week with the recent cold evenings.
Congratulations to Chris Hunter and Dell Pernas as they took home the top prize in the 13th annual Keg South Snook Tournament with a 32-inch snook weighing in at 10 ½ pounds.
Check back every Wednesday for a new report and make sure to listen to Chris Hunter on the Florida Sportsman radio show on 1080 AM Saturday mornings at 7.-Tee Clarkson
