South Florida Fishing Report
May 14, 2008
Captain Rich Smith reports bonefish and permit in good numbers all over Biscayne Bay. Permit are in schools of 4 to10 and bones in schools of 4 to 25 fish. Tarpon are trickling down the east side of Elliot Key, with fishermen staking out on the usual points up and down the coast. Natural (white) patterns are working best on these fish as the sun gets higher.
The bulk of tarpon fishing out of Flamingo is happening in the Sandy Key area. First National Bank and Cape beaches have been the places to be over the last week. Brighter colored flies are the ticket in the dirty water conditions. Snook and redfish are still around in Florida Bay.
The worm hatch in the lower Keys could happen within the next week or so. Thousands of tarpon are lining the channels around Bahia Honda Bridge in anticipation.
Chris Hunter at Worldwide Sportsman in Miami reports dorado and wahoo showing up regularly offshore, with scattered blackfin tuna in deeper blue water. The recent coldfront should turn the sailfish on.
Canals like Black Creek (C1), Snake Creek (C9) and Corral Gables Waterway (C3) remain good bets for peacock and largemouth bass. Snook are regularly falling for lures fished under bridges in the intercoastal waterway.
On the beach, bluefish, snook, tarpon and jacks are making up most of the catch with some permit available in deeper water and around wrecks off the jetties.
Check back every Wednesday for a new report and make sure to listen to Chris Hunter on the Florida Sportsman radio show on 1080 AM Saturday mornings at 7.
