The US Fencing Summer Nationals roll into town today, bringing ten days of lunging, attacking, thrusting and saluting to the MB Convention Center. Among other things, entrants in this year’s competition will be qualifying for September’s World Veterans Championships in Sydney, Australia and October’s 2007 World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The tournament is traditionally US Fencing’s largest event of the season. We broke it down by the numbers.
- 3,000 fencers
- 6,000 spectators
- 78 individual events
- 18 team competitions
- 115 referees
- 49 states represented
- 7-88 is players’ age range
Do some good: The USFA and DKMS Americas (the world’s largest nonprofit bone marrow donor center) will be holding a dive to register potential bone marrow donors from June 30 - July 2. Stop by a table and register – it shouldn’t take more than five minutes. The details: US Fencing Summer Nationals; June 29 – July 8; Miami Beach Convention Center; Free; usfencing.org.
