Living large has been a Miami tradition for nearly a century. Way before there was Star Island or Fisher Island, there was Vizcaya. Built in 1910 by American industrialist James Deering, Vizcaya was conceived as a private winter retreat. Over 1,000 workers built the original sprawling 180-acre estate spanning both sides of South Miami Avenue in what is now Coconut Grove.
Today the 34-room home has been converted into a United States National Historic Landmark, a museum and an event space that’s hosted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan.
This Sunday it’s yours for free. Stroll the gardens, browse the 15th century antiques and step back in time courtesy of the museum’s Free Sunday event. Whet your appetite with our look inside the estate.
