Hooray for Labor Day

Grove Isle Hotel & Spa

It’s the weekend, and even better, it’s a LONG weekend. Here are some highlights, don't forget to check out the calendar for more events.

THURSDAY

You’ve worked hard, why not splurge a bit? Head to the Bentley Hotel for Orangia's fashion preview of its new collection and walk away with a new awareness of global poverty (you knew we’d sneak something educational in there). Make a date for a stress-reducing massage at Grove Isle’s SpaTerre - Miami-Dade and Broward residents enjoy $50 off through October. You can’t forget dinner, we vote for Gnu Restaurant's “Sing-a-long Thursdays,” where Billy Joel, Barry Manilow and the like compliment Caribbean and Italian-inspired dishes.

FRIDAY

Three work-free days span before you, kick-start the joy tonight. Dig out those old shoes for Morgan Miller's Soles4Souls benefit: donate lightly worn kicks and enjoy a 20% discount on all merchandise. Alternately, learn basic Reiki and other healing techniques at the Wallflower Gallery. Film lovers can catch a screening of Werner Herzog’s film Little Dieter Needs to Fly at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. The classic is based on Dieter Dengler’s captivity in Vietnam.

SATURDAY

Sleep in, make breakfast and enjoy the morning. At noon, head to Aventura Mall for the Humane Society of Greater Miami's Adopt-A-Pet program. Those seeking more tranquility can check out the Day Yoga Intensive at Miami Life Center, where ashtanga is this week's focus. Top off the day with a Miami Spice meal (it’s your last month to enjoy it!).

SUNDAY

Since it’s Labor Day weekend, get an early start to the day and buy all your barbecue staples. Then scoot over to Temple Israel of Greater Miami for the first annual Guava Rugelach Festival, a celebration of Jewish music, culture and food. And yes, there will be guava rugelach. For those looking to satisfy an art craving, the Wolfsonian-FIU hosts an exhibit dedicated to war propaganda in children’s books: Indoctrinating Youth: Selections from the Pamela K. Harer Gift of Propaganda Books for Children. Sports fans can cheer on the Marlins as they take on the Philadelphia Phillies at Dolphin Stadium.

MONDAY

Work-free Mondays automatically qualify as good days. Start this one off with a relaxing morning yoga session at Bayfront Park then mosey over to the Miami Home Design & Remodeling Show for design inspiration. Head home in time to catch some rays, splash around in the pool and fire up the barbecue. Be sure to read our barbecue basics for great grilled food.
