Weekend Recap

Jason Odell

Ninety-degree temps and afternoon showers kept things sweaty and steamy as Sandra Bernhard headlined a weekend of eclectic indoor fun. Bernhard took the Colony Theater stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in a musical and comedic performance the New Times described as “better than a drag show.” The five-foot, ten-inch comedian tackled the Dixie Chicks, Al Sharpton, Cheryl Tiegs, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton and others in the animated performance. Also on stage this weekend were Bitter Sugar, Cuban director Leon Ichaso’s 1996 film, and Yerma, Federico Garcia Lorca's 1934 play.Art aficionados took a walk on the wild side with Jose Carrera and his OchoPlaca artists as they showcased their designs inspired by “the alternative ego" at Gallery 138.Music lovers danced between Nicole Yarling’s soothing Jazz at MOCA performance and Tobacco Road’s edgy Virago Women Who Rock concert featuring over 20 female bands performing on three stages. Finally, wellness hit the weekend courtesy of Vine’s Going Green organic wine workshop (exploring the differences between organic and biodynamic wines), Miami Life Center’s Alexander Technique workshop (designed to eliminate poor posture, contraction and tension) and lululemon athletica’s community yoga (free yoga for all every Sunday).
